Ignition Replacement & Repair

Imagine you go to stick your key into your car and it is having trouble turning. Over time this problem gets worse and worse, until one day you simply can not turn over the key to your vehicle. If this is the case it is possible that your ignition is damaged and needs to be repaired or replaced

Ignition Repair

An ignition works with a series of springs and wafers. When the key is inserted into the ignition the springs and wafers move to the correct levels to be flush with the cylinder, allowing the cylinder to turn. This lets you turn the key over and allows you to start your car. Over time these springs and wafers can become damaged and may need to be replaced, or the whole cylinder may need to be replaced altogether

Ignition Damage Prevention

Of course, rather than damaging your ignition in the first place, it is always best to try to prevent it from needing a repair. At Extra Locksmith it is our goal to help better serve our community, which is why we are giving you some tips first to first reduce your likelihood of getting in this situation in the first place.

  1. Have your keychain be as light as possible

Oftentimes with customers who need their ignitions repaired, we see that their keychain is extremely heavy. Maybe they have their key, their house keys, business keys, and a spare key for their spouses or child’s wife on the key chain as well. The added weight when going to turn over the ignition wears down the springs and pins over time and may cause damage to the internal components of the ignition.

2. Get duplicate keys before yours get worn down

3. Make sure you use the right key for your car, and insert it all the way before turning

This seems like a no brainer, but time and time again we get calls about damaged ignitions which have been damaged for exactly these reasons. If you use a key that fits in your ignition, but isn’t the right one for your car. Or if you have used the right key but haven’t inserted it the proper way, then it is possible that the springs and wafers won’t be aligned properly to turn your ignition over. If you then try to force it you can then damage the ignition.
